Beyond the Prescription: How Community Pharmacists Protect Zimbabwe from Substandard Medicines
In an era where global supply chains are increasingly complex, the role of the community pharmacist as the “Specialist Custodian” has never been more critical.
As we move through 2026, the influx of substandard and falsified medical products remains a significant challenge for public health in Africa. The Community Pharmacist Association (CPA) stands as the first line of defense. By adhering to the Association’s Code of Ethics, our members ensure that every product on their shelves is sourced from licensed wholesalers and verified by the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ).
We aren’t just dispensers; we are clinical gatekeepers. Our role involves educating the public on how to identify genuine packaging and the dangers of purchasing “specially restricted preparations” from unauthorized street vendors. Through rigorous peer reviews and solidarity in practice, the CPA is working to ensure that “Patient Safety” remains the currency of trust in Zimbabwean healthcare.
